Enhancing Education
September 9 , 2005

Principal Bill Bagshaw

Throughout the school year I will be providing students and parents with information that will enhance the learning environment at Hope Street Academy. Periodically, I will have other staff members contribute to this letter in hopes of developing even better lines of communication between school and home.

I am very proud of the environment at Hope Street. One of my biggest challenges over the past five years has been to make the public aware of the type of academic institution that we are. Perceptions are often bigger than reality. The reality here is that we are a quality school that offers our students a variety of customized schedules that best meet the needs of our students.

Visitors often comment on the neat appearance of our facility. More importantly, visitors notice the friendly reception they receive upon arrival. It is my hope that all visitors (particularly parents) feel a sense of ownership in what takes place here each day.

I have been asked to provide parents with a recent school board policy regarding racial harassment I think this policy reflects a general awareness of USD 501 to address a sensitivity to issues many take for granted. Please let me know if you have questions regarding this policy.

Board of Education Policy 8110 prohibits racial harassment of students and provides a procedure for making complaints and remedying violations. The Policy requires annual notification of the Policy in all school newsletters. Policy 8110 can be found on pages 4 and 5 of of the 2005-2006 Student Handbook, which you should have received at your student's enrollment. It is also available on the school district's web site and choosing Policy 8110 Racial Harassment: Students.

A copy of the Policy is presently posted in our building in the main office.

Remember when we all had “just” a phone number? Now you can contact me at 438-4280, or email me at hbagshaw@topeka.k12.ks.us.

Respectfully,
Bill Bagshaw
